August 24, 2018 Devil’s Hole State Park
Though I was nursing an ankle injury, I was able to take both restless kids to Devil’s Hole State Park for a quick hike in the Niagara Gorge. We started with a quick jaunt down the Rim Trail. The Jet Boats roared down the river, which looked more Emerald Green than usual. Of particular interest to my son were the sticky insect collectors used by entomologists. It looked to us like they were getting some pretty good samples for their study.
After a bit, we descended into the Gorge to check on the new trail to the NYPA fishing access and to see Devils Hole Cave. I’m glad they officially rerouted the trail that way. I’m hopeful that the increased official traffic will cut down on the graffiti and litter in that special area. Still, there looked like there was a recent campfire circle near the entrance.
As we climbed out of the Gorge, we could see a large mob of people in purple shirts walking down the Robert Moses and heading toward the bike path. The Niagara University students were taking their pilgrimage from campus to the Falls. It’s great to see them out there and I hope they’ll find the time to explore the Gorge as their year continues.
